Why do I feel like someone significant within the fashion or music industry always passes away during fall Fashion Week? Two years ago it was McQueen … today it is Whitney Houston. Ugh.
I had to pay immediate homage to Whitney because even though she wasn’t a huge style icon per say … at least not for me … her music is a staple to fashionable women everywhere. We’ve all been with our girlfriends at a party or in a dorm room or at a bar and the moment “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” would come on … it was like we struck God damn gold. We would immediately start dancing like fools straight out of 1985 and start singing every word to each other. In fact, the whole entire bar usually sang every single word as well. What can I say, hearing “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” whilst drinking is “freak out” worthy.
So thank you for that song, thank you for The Bodyguard (we all watched it, we all loved it, we all cried and then had tiny crushes on Kevin Costner), thank you for singing “I Will Always Love You” so my roommate in college could serenade me horribly with it when we were cracked out from studying, thank you for “I’m Every Women” … it’s a pretty bad ass song that I usually always am sure to hear while in T.J. Maxx, and thank you for your voice and talent.
It has still not been released how she died, but I will assume it was drug related. Another beautiful talented lost because of this awful addiction and disease. If you know someone with addiction issues, please do everything you can to guide them to rehabilitation.
Rest in peace, Whitney.
